Session One
What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
I get asked this question often and I didn't have a confident reply as I only had a vague idea of how Manaiakalani came about and what the pedagogy (apart from digital learn create share)actually was. It's a very interesting and inspiring back story. It has shown me that taking risks and trying new things in education is very, very worthwhile. I am in awe of the pioneers of Manaiakalani and the incredible initiatives they fought against the tide to make happen. The community of the 7 schools is a similar social economic area to my school, to provide internet and digital learning to these families is incredible.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
I had many gaps in the simple google apps such as Google Drive and Google Docs. I have learnt many new skills and shortcuts which I will (and already have) implemented and share with my team. I have also found a life hack with Google Keep.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
The Voice typing tool is one I will implement immediately. I can see the benefits of this for particular students and in Literacy for all of the students (reading tumble activity). I use Google Drawing quite a lot in my create and share process, I didnt realise I could use Google Docs in a similar way.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Google Keep and the improved use of Google Docs are two things I will use immediately. I am also conscious of managing my Drive better. I think this is a good skill to share with my students also.
Below is a link to the quick Google Doc image that I made during the explore session. I am looking forward to next Friday.

I used google keep at a conference recently and loved being able to take photos and have my notes and links all in the one place. This is one I will definitely be sharing with my team back at school.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, like you, I have implemented the voice typing tool already this week in my classroom. Its given a few of my students a new found love of writing lessons. They are finally able to write a narrative and watching them share their story with so much pride made my heart melt a little.
ReplyDeleteI always get super inspired when I hear the Manaiakalani backstory. It definitely puts things into perspective and gives context to why we (and our learners) use many of the systems and tools and devices everyday. How'd your learners go with Voice typing? Did they manage to give it a go this week?
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, looking forward to the journey and learning together. Enjoying the support and looking forward to Week 2.
