Session 2 - Digital Fluency Intensive

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

After sharing what went well from the previous session and what we wanted to learn more about, Dorothy shared with us more about the 'Learn' part of 'Learn, Create, Share' and the pedagogy behind it. This whole year I have learned alongside my students as we embarked on our first 1:1 chromebook year. I have had to deep dive from the start of the year along with my ILE co-teacher Rachelle. Initially dragging our feet into this new phase after just getting used to being in an ILE, we now, three terms in, wouldn't have it any other way. I feel that Manaiakalani's integration probably faced the same dragging feet until the rest of the schools could see the benefits in both teaching and learning.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I learned how to use my Gmail and tabs more effectively. Immediately I have cleaned up my tabs, my bookmarks and installed mini Toby with a collection set for my planning. My Gmail is now more efficient with all of my old emails archived and working ones starred. I have installed the Google Calendar app on my phone and synced with my personal (life hack!). We then moved on to Google Hangouts, which after initial terror, I feel I can now use fairly adeptly and can definitely see the benefits. Our attempt at recording our group google hangout using Quicktime didn't work as the internal microphone wasn't turned on...but we got the idea. Using Quicktime is a great tool too!

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I think using the bookmarks without the names is a cleaner way of storing them. Archiving old emails and introducing Google Hangouts. This can be a learning tool I could use in my reading tumble.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Cleaning up my emails, and streamlining my calendar is already a major change. I will share this with my team. Using mini Toby to store tab setting collections is very handy. I can see using Google Hangouts as a tool I will use both professionally and for personal use.
